Tips & tricks for using medical batteries

To ensure your medical devices remain ready for use at all times, the correct handling of batteries plays a crucial role. With these simple tips you can extend the service life of your medical batteries and improve operational safety:

    1. Charging correctly
Only use chargers that are approved for the relevant battery type. Ensure that the battery is not kept permanently charged to 100 % in order to extend its service life.

    2. Follow the 80-20 rule
Ideally, charge lithium-ion batteries only up to around 80 % and avoid deep discharges below 20 %. This will ensure a significantly longer service life.

    3. Check rechargeable batteries regularly
Check the capacity at specified intervals. A significantly reduced runtime or abnormal voltage readings indicate that replacement is necessary.

    4. Correct storage
Store unused batteries in a cool, dry place with a charge level of approx. 40–60 %. This will help maintain capacity over a longer period.

    5. Comply with safety standards
Only use tested and certified medical batteries compliant with the EU MDR. This ensures that your devices will function reliably in an emergency.

    6. Plan replacements in good time
Even high-quality medical batteries have a limited service life. Plan replacement in advance to avoid failures in important devices such as defibrillators or infusion pumps.

Frequently asked questions about batteries for medical technology

Medical batteries are specifically designed for use in medical devices. They must meet strict requirements in terms of safety, reliability and quality. Whilst conventional batteries are used in everyday devices, medical batteries are designed to function reliably even under heavy loads and to comply with the specific standards of the healthcare sector.
Batteries and rechargeable batteries used in medical devices are subject to internationally recognised standards that ensure safety, quality and reliability. These standards guarantee that medical rechargeable batteries function reliably even under demanding conditions and that patient safety is ensured at all times. The declaration of conformity for our AKKUmed rechargeable batteries can be found on the relevant product pages.
Medical batteries are used in a wide range of devices, such as defibrillators, infusion and syringe pumps, patient monitors, ventilators and electrically adjustable hospital beds. In short: wherever a reliable power supply is essential in everyday medical practice.
The lifespan of a medical battery depends on the type of battery, how it is used and how it is maintained. High-quality lithium-ion batteries can last for several hundred to over a thousand charge cycles. Factors such as temperature, charging and discharging behaviour, and proper maintenance play a crucial role in this.
Medical batteries are equipped with safety mechanisms that prevent risks such as overheating, short circuits or deep discharge. They are tested to strict safety standards to ensure a reliable power supply in everyday medical practice. However, a high level of safety can only be guaranteed if tested and certified batteries are used.
It is important that the voltage, capacity and design are precisely suited to the device in question. Furthermore, only batteries that meet the necessary standards and certifications should be used. Checking the manufacturer’s specifications and seeking expert advice will help you make the right choice and ensure the safety of the device.
Medical batteries should be stored in a cool, dry environment and protected from extreme temperatures. A recommended state of charge of around 40–60% is optimal for storage. It is also important to use only compatible chargers and to check the batteries’ capacity on a regular basis.
Medical batteries must not be disposed of with household waste; instead, they must be recycled via special collection points or take-back schemes. Strict regulations apply to the transport and disposal of lithium-ion batteries in particular, in order to avoid environmental and safety risks.
There are various ways to check whether a battery is still working reliably. A first indication is its runtime in practical use: if the battery lasts significantly less time than usual, this suggests a reduced capacity. More accurate results can be obtained by measuring the capacity using a suitable charger or tester that displays the remaining battery capacity in milliampere-hours (mAh). The voltage can also be checked with a multimeter – if it is significantly below the target value, the battery is usually damaged. For medical devices, the following applies: batteries should be tested regularly in accordance with the manufacturer’s specifications, as safety and reliability are paramount here. If the readings are abnormal or there is any uncertainty, it is advisable to replace the battery to ensure the safe operation of the device.
The 80-20 rule describes a recommended method for charging and discharging lithium-ion batteries as gently as possible. It states that, ideally, the battery should not be charged to 100% or discharged to 0%. Instead, it is recommended to keep the charge level between approximately 20% and 80%. The reason: Extreme charge states place greater strain on the cell chemistry and shorten the service life. By adhering to the 80-20 rule, more charge cycles can be achieved, capacity can be maintained at a stable level for longer, and the service life and reliability of the battery can thus be significantly extended. Particularly in medical technology, where batteries play a central role in operational safety, this method contributes to greater reliability.
